Choice of a backfill material is always an important decision. Traditional stone backfill may not be feasible due to access, cost, or weight/load factors.  Controlled density fill is an excellent alternative.  It is also known as cellular concrete, engineered fill, or flowable fill. This lightweight material offers a range of strengths, densities and set times. Its advantages over conventional fills include:

• no compaction needed
• no future settlement
• thermal insulation
• lower cost

Applications include deep foundation backfill, filling adjacent to MSE walls, backfill of abandoned foundations/structures, and open cut backfills.

Deep foundation backfill projects often involve a very limited work area. Materials can be placed by a combination of methods including pumping and tremmie tube.
