Micropile Systems

Micropiles are the largest and fastest growing deep foundation application. This technology was first developed in Italy in the 1950s. The ancient foundation of Italy's many historic structures were in urgent need of repair to meet modern code requirements. Conventional pile systems were generally not feasible, because they require more open area for installation than was often available. This unique combination of engineering challenges eventually gave birth to the micropile.

Micropiles are high capacity, small diameter (5" to 12") drilled and grouted in-place piles designed with steel reinforcement to primarily resist structural loading. The grout creates a bond between the interior casing wall and structural bar, as well as the external casing wall and the soil. Design loads range from 75 to 300 tons. Micropiles are rapidly gaining popularity for foundations in urbanized areas or in locations with low headroom and restricted access. They are an ideal choice because they can be installed in virtually any ground condition with minimal vibration and disturbance to existing structures. These piles are designed to meet torque, tension, compression, and bending stresses.
